Conor Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Postgraduate Tutor within the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences at Ulster University (UU). He is a board member of UU’s Doctoral College and is UU’s Institutional Director for the ESRC Northern Ireland and North-East England Doctoral Training Partnership (ESRC NINE DTP). Conor was at the forefront of the bid to recommission ESRC NINE DTP, representing the consortium in a four-person team that was interviewed by the ESRC, subsequently securing £28.5 million.

Conor has a distinct focus on widening access to higher education and he is the Course Director of ‘Stay Onside: Applied Football Studies’, a Personal and Professional Development Course delivered to prisoners in HMP Maghaberry. In acknowledgment of his dedication to widening access to higher education, Conor received the Early Career Educator Award at UU's Distinguished Education Excellence Awards (2023).

Conor is an active researcher. He has published two books, a research monograph titled ‘Young Men, Masculinities and Imprisonment: An Ethnographic Study in Northern Ireland’ (2023), and an edited collection titled ‘Crime, Justice and Religion: A Critical Appraisal’ (2023), and numerous book chapters, peer reviewed articles and reports. In November 2022 he was invited to Westminster to give oral evidence based on his research expertise to the NI Affair’s Committee on the effects of paramilitaries on NI communities. In recognition of his commitments to research and impact Conor received the Future Research Leader Award at the UU's Distinguished Research Excellence Awards (2023).
