Abstract
This year marks 200 years of existence of the probation service in the Netherlands. This article will describe some central themes that have proved important over the years, with the aim of drawing lessons from the past that we can use to meet the challenges we see ahead of us in the near future: to include everyone in our society through effective reintegration and (thus) a strong bond with society. Much has changed in the past 200 years but some crucial elements of the probation work have always remained. Therefore we will at the end of this article once again look back to wh at has stayed the same over the years: compassion for fellow human beings and passion for the work thatthe probation service delivers.
