Article 5: Reforming Psychology-Based Correctional Programming through Video-Supported Collaborative Learning (ACJ16-A005)

Abstract

Technology is a key thrust for the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) in our advancement of our prison operations and correctional rehabilitation. Specific to correctional rehabilitation, this article describes how SPS adopted Video-Supported Collaborative Learning from the educational field to disrupt the traditional means through which psychology-based correctional programming is conducted for offenders. While adhering to evidence-based principles, SPS has leveraged on technology to challenge the norms of traditional modalities of interventions. Interventions are not conducted by practitioners for or to offenders, but with offenders, using video-enabled learning, reflection, and practice.

Senior Psychologist, Singapore Prison Service, Singapore

Sarah Lavinia Joseph is a Senior Psychologist and has been working with Singapore Prison Service (SPS) since 2014. She has undertaken work which enhanced workplace psychological well-being, coordinated crises responses, and incorporated psychological knowledge into prison operations and risk management. In her current position in the Programme Design and Evaluation Branch, she designs, implements, and evaluates various initiatives ranging from Psychology-based Correctional Programmes to regimes in SPS.

Loh Jia Hui

Correctional Rehabilitation Specialist, Singapore Prison Service, Singapore

Loh Jia Hui is a Correctional Rehabilitation Specialist and has been working with Singapore Prison Service (SPS) since 2018. She has undertaken work which involves conducting Psychology-based Correctional Programmes (PCP) group and individual rehabilitation interventions with offenders with substance abuse issues. In her current position in Programme Design and Evaluation Branch, she collaborates with various stakeholders to design, implement, and evaluate various PCPs and regime related initiatives in SPS.

Liang-yu (April) Lin

Senior Assistant Director, Correctional Research Branch, Singapore Prison Service, Singapore

April Lin Liangyu is a Principal Psychologist with the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) and currently serves as the Senior Assistant Director (SAD) of the Correctional Research Branch, overseeing research activities of SPS. Previously, she was the SAD of the Psychological Programme Design and Evaluation Branch, where she was involved in developing Psychology-based Correctional Programmes, as well as evaluating rehabilitation programmes, regimes, and policies. With over 16 years of experience in correctional research and practice, April is an advocate of the scientist-practitioner model. She is dedicated to enhancing service delivery for the offender population as informed by evidence.

April holds a Master's degree in Applied Psychology from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research interests include the use of positive psychology interventions with offenders, desistance, substance addiction, and the neurocognitive functioning of offenders with drug abuse issues.
