Article 9: Incarcerated Women Benefit More from Digital Rehabilitation than Incarcerated Men (ACJ18-A009)

Abstract
The concept has now extended to two closed men's prisons. Previous surveys of incarcerated women revealed a positive link between technology and rehabilitation. This study compares all three Smart Prisons' incarcerated women's and men's experiences of digital services. Findings suggest that the Smart Prison concept benefits especially incarcerated women's rehabilitation. Incarcerated men's experiences are also positive but it appears that men benefit differently from women. Men see more benefits in the digital management of everyday matters inside prison than women. The differences can be explained by gender differences, prison culture, and the current challenges of staff turnover and overcrowding.
