In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in infections among workers and inmates within state prisons, many states are implementing early release of prisoners to reduce the impact of COVID-19 within their correctional facilities. This action will help alleviate overcrowding in prisons and reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. However, upon re-entry those with opioid and other substance use disorders (OUD/SUD) face other risks that include reoccurrence of substance use, fatal and non-fatal drug overdose, and recidivism.
