Gültekin YILDIZ was born in İstanbul in 1973. He received his BA from Boğaziçi University, Faculty of Arts and Science, Department of History. In 1998 he started his academic career at Marmara University, Faculty of Arts and Science as a teaching assistant. At the same University he completed his MA and PhD. degrees at the Institute of Turkological Studies, Modern History Program. Yıldız, was assigned to İstanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Contemporary History as Assistant Professor in 2010 and Associate Professor in 2013. In addition to Istanbul University, between 2010-2016 he lectured as visiting professor at the Turkish Air Forces Academy and Turkish Army War College. Following the foundation of Turkish National Defence University (TNDU), he was appointed in 2017 as the Director of the Atatürk Institute for Strategic Studies of TNDU. Following this, he served between 2020-2023 as the Dean of the TNDU Turkish Military Academy in Ankara. Prof. Yıldız is actually teaching at TNDU and Istanbul University.

Prof. Dr. Yıldız’s research focuses mainly on modern penal history and military history. He is the author of the first academic study on the foundation and development process of modern prison system in Ottoman Empire. For the last 6 years, he is conducting a research project on the history of Turkish prisons and prison administration from 1840’s to 2000.

Prof. Yıldız has several academic publications including monographs, research articles, edited books, book chapters, symposium and congress papers, encyclopedia entries and book reviews. Besides Turkey, Yıldız has also attended at several international scientific and professional events in Canada, England, Austria, Russian Federation, Romania as well as at the European Council and NATO.
