Advancing Corrections Journal - Edition #16 - Reforming Corrections Through Technology (ACJ16-A004)
Abstract
Traditionally prisons have been digitally deprived environments and people in custody digitally marginalized. However, recent developments in many countries have improved justice involved individuals’ digital rights. In a modern digitalized society, digital is also the means for securing basic rights and human rights of all citizens. Prisons shouldn’t prevent these rights by providing inadequate access to outside prison services and contacts. We present in this article how digitalization supports rehabilitation, reintegration, and human rights in Finnish prisons. Access to Internet per se is a way to support equal rights and digital skills can be compared to literacy skills. Justice involved individuals’ reintegration to the society needs digital means and digital skills. Regarding this, digitalization in prisons should be supported more than hitherto.
