Advancing Corrections Journal - Edition #16 - Reforming Corrections Through Technology (ACJ16-A006)
Abstract
The use of technology in psychological interventions has opened up exciting possibilities over the past decade. The Correctional Services Department (CSD) of Hong Kong has been proactively applying innovative technology in supporting the rehabilitative needs of persons-in-custody (PICs) in recent years. This paper discusses 3 latest technology-assisted psychological interventions developed by the CSD, namely: i) a scenario-based virtual reality (VR) role-play system for PICs’ skills training; ii) Psyber Space, a digitalized psychological programme for PICs; and iii) a project that strengthens PICs’ desistance from crime through videoconferencing technology. Although these initiatives are still in their infancy, the preliminary positive responses received suggest that the use of technology in psychological treatment warrants further development.
