Article 11: Peer Supporter Academy in the Singapore Prison Service (ACJ17-A011)
Abstract
This paper introduces the Peer Supporter Academy (PSA), a ground-up initiative from the Singapore Prison Service (SPS), to equip, empower, and enable incarcerated individuals to serve as peer supporters. The PSA redefines incarcerated individuals’ roles in their own correctional rehabilitation, demonstrating how both the broader system and staff can influence and impact the creation of a community-oriented, rehabilitative environment. Evaluation findings indicate a positive reception of the PSA training, co-developed and co-delivered by staff and pioneering peer supporters. Additionally, the findings highlight transformative changes in peer supporters and their community of peers, emphasizing the broader significance of developing peer supporters within the context of humane corrections.
