Article 5: Turning Correctional Education Inside-Out: Experiences And Lessons From A University Partnership (ACJ6-A005)

Abstract

Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) and Vancouver Island University (VIU) have been delivering an innovative educational program to students by holding a criminology class called ‘Inside-Out’ inside NCC. This manuscript details the experiences and lessons that have come from offering this course over the past three years while highlighting the impact on correctional staff, incarcerated students, and university students who are likely to join the criminal justice field. Along with the positive impact of the program, we discuss implementation challenges and provide insights into forming educational partnerships for correctional agencies that may be looking to adopt more innovative educational programming.

Lauren Mayes

Professor, Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada

Lauren Mayes is a Professor of Criminology at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia. In 2017, she received her PhD in Criminal Justice from Temple University, where she was introduced to the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program as an undergraduate outside learner in 2006. Lauren’s research focuses on pursuing solutions that ensure the criminal justice system functions in a way that maximizes health, safety, and access to opportunities - particularly for those who encounter the system frequently or for extended periods of time.

Teresa Owens

Deputy Warden Programs, Nanaimo Correctional Centre, Canada

Teresa Owens began working for BC Corrections in 2005 at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, a maximum-security facility located in Victoria, British Columbia. In 2016 she moved to Nanaimo Correctional Centre and is currently in the Deputy Warden Programs post, overseeing multiple departments and programs; one of which is the Guthrie Therapeutic Community. While employed by the Adult Custody Division Teresa has worked on several innovative provincial initiatives and committees. She also spends her time participating in competitive sports events and activities. Recently Teresa attended the 2017 World Police Fire Games where she won a bronze and two gold medals in various rowing competitions.

Joanne Falvai

Faculty Member, Vancouver Island University, Canada

Joanne Falvai has been a faculty member in the Department of Criminology at Vancouver Island University, located in Nanaimo, British Columbia since 2001. Joanne’s teaching and research interests include evidence-based correctional policy, re-entry, the social construction of crime, public misconceptions about crime, crime and the media, and specifically, the laws, politics, treatment and construction of the “drug problem.” Joanne has been facilitating Inside-Out courses at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) since 2016.

Teri DuTemple

Warden, Nanaimo Correctional Centre, Canada

Since beginning her career in Corrections in 1989, Terri has developed a passion for working with marginalized people and a keen interest in programs related to mental health and substance use. Teri’s career path was varied and included assignments in youth and adult custody, the Investigation, Inspection and Standards Office, and Corrections Branch Headquarters. Teri is presently the Warden at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre, where she is inspired by the kindness and compassion of staff in their approach to managing offenders, and their belief that change is possible for anyone. Teri is driven to provide evidence-based programs for the Inmates in her care, and to ensure the best outcomes possible.
