Dr. Vîlcică is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. Prior to joining Temple, she served as a Judge at the Court of the Fourth District of Bucharest, Romania. Adopting a systemic perspective, her interests center on issues of discretionary justice, especially punishment and liberty decisions, criminal justice policy and interventions, and comparative justice. Specifically, her research addresses the following areas: processing and adjudication in criminal courts, including preventive detention; parole (conditional release) and correctional issues; and comparative justice policy, in particular, contrasting inquisitorial and adversarial justice practices. Most recently, she has been involved in a large-scale investigation of the correction and parole processes in Pennsylvania, US, with a special focus on the handling of violent offenders. Her research has been published in journals such as Criminal Justice and Behavior, Criminology, European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research, International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Justice, and Revista de Criminologie, Criminalistică şi Penologie (journal of the Romanian Society of Criminology and Criminalistics).

Dr. Kimberly Houser

Associate Professor

Dr. Kimberly Houser is an Associate Professor at Rowan University.y. She received her PhD from Temple University where she worked as a research consultant on the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Study. She has published in the areas of mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders in the offender population, animal visitation as therapeutic interventions for jailed populations, and the influence of neighborhood context and nonresidential land use on reentry and recidivism. She has served as a consultant on a Second Chance Act Grant and evaluator of a federal mental health court.
