Article 13: Do Wardens hold the key to prison culture? Preliminary evidence and a call for research on empowering correctional leaders to reimagine prison (ACJ13-A013)

Abstract

Research across disciplines links improved customer outcomes to organizational culture, and organizational leadership drives that culture. The same links may also exist in corrections such that improved prison culture may facilitate better outcomes for returning citizens, and correctional leaders can influence those improvements. Warden Exchange®, a program of Prison Fellowship®, was developed based on the hypothesis that equipping corrections professionals to be transformational leaders will ultimately lead to better prison culture and outcomes. Evaluation evidence suggests that prison leaders may indeed hold the key to transforming culture in corrections. Further investigation is recommended.

Dr. Rachel D. Crawley is an Experimental Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor. She completed her BS degree in Psychology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, a MA in Professional Counseling at Amberton University in Garland, Texas, and a MS and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Texas Christian University. Prior to her research career, she was a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor working with adults in the criminal justice system struggling substance use and mental health challenges. She has since worked for Headquarters Marine Corps as a civilian behavioral health data analyst focusing on suicide data and quality of care, the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University as a researcher, the Institute of Behavioral Research at Texas Christian University as a researcher, and Tarleton State University as an instructor. She is currently the Director of Research and Curriculum Assessment with the Program Design and Evaluation team at Prison Fellowship®.

Jesse Wiese

Jesse Wiese serves as National Director of Program Design and Evaluation at Prison Fellowship, the United States’ largest outreach to prisoners, former prisoners, and their families. He has worked in various aspects of criminal justice including prison programming, reentry, and advocacy. Currently, Wiese manages Prison Fellowship’s program design and evaluation and the expansion of Prison Fellowship’s Good Citizenship ModelTM, an innovative approach to defining and measuring success in the prison system. Wiese served seven-and-a-half years incarcerated for robbery and is a powerful advocate for criminal justice solutions that promote human flourishing. Wiese shares his unique insights with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including state legislatures, universities, and businesses. He has testified before Congress and several state legislatures. Wiese is currently a licensed attorney and lives in Virginia with his wife and children.
