Article 8: Gardening works: Lessons learned from a sustainable garden program in a residential community correction setting for women (ACJ13-A008)

Abstract

Ecotherapy and gardening have gained popularity in corrections, with most interventions focusing on prison settings. This paper briefly describes the authors’ experiences developing a gardening program in a community corrections facility for women, describing a pilot research program and preliminary results. Findings indicate that gardening is an effective, low-cost programming option for community residential settings that improve clients’ mental health and nutritional awareness, fosters community partnerships, and promotes camaraderie among clients and staff.

Daniela Jauk, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor for Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Akron, Ohio. She received her master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Graz in her home country, Austria. She completed her Ph.D. in Sociology as a Fulbright student at the University of Akron/OH in 2013. Her areas of research interest and teaching are gender and sexualities, inequality in the criminal justice system, and qualitative methods. She is currently working on projects in clinical sociology and research around gardening in carceral settings and reentry.

Andria Blackwood

Associate Research Scientist, Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center, United States

Andria Blackwood, Ph.D., is an associate research scientist at Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center. She received her master’s degree in sociology and her Ph.D. in geography at Kent State University in Ohio. Her research addresses building community capacity, neighborhood effects, the relationship between substance use disorder and recidivism, and the development and implementation of correctional programming for successful reentry. She served as director of the Serenity in the Garden program.
